Revere’s Riders Donates Over $14k to Ovar’coming Together

by / / 2020 Marty Brown Memorial Invitational, After Action Report (AAR), Marty Brown Memorial, RR in the News

2020 was the second year for the Marty Brown Memorial series of events and we hoped to improve our fundraising to $20,000 from just under $12,000 last year. Our plans included splitting the Marty Brown Memorial Open event into two separate 1-day events hopefully making it easier for more people to attend.

Then COVID-19 came on the scene…

Marty Brown Memorial Open Round #1

In the months leading up to the 2020 Marty Brown Memorial Open Round #1 in mid-June we just hoped to be able to put the event on, never mind exceeding our fundraising level from 2019. Fortunately, the COVID-19 situation eased enough that we were able to run the event with 27 participants at the A&A Optics range in Liberty, IN.

Round #1 of the Marty Brown Memorial Open was a 1-day event dedicated to rifle marksmanship training only. This year we also featured several “exotic rifles” which could be shot by event participants based on a per-round donation. These rifles included:

As might be expected, the Barrett was by far the most popular rifle with a line forming to shoot it from time to time.

Through generous donations of items to our silent auction, skills contest and give aways at the Marty Brown Memorial Open Round #1, we felt very fortunate to be able to present a check for $4984 to Ovar’coming Together.

Marty Brown Memorial Round #2

With a successful Round #1 under our belt, we looked forward to the Marty Brown Memorial Open Round #2 in August. This would be a dedicated 1-day pistol marksmanship event and would be held at a private range on the north side of Indianapolis.

We welcomed 32 participants to Round #2. With the success of the “exotic rifles” of Round #1, we had a number of “exotic pistols” on hand for event participants to try including:

  • single-action “Cowboy Action” style revolvers
  • suppressed pistols
  • derringers
  • olympic style “free pistols”

Through generous donations of items to our silent auction, skills contest and give aways at the Marty Brown Memorial Open Round #2, we again exceeded our own expectations and were able to present a check for $5180 to Ovar’coming Together.

In particular, we would like to thank Pam and George Faerber of Faerber’s Bee Windows for sponsoring a silent auction item as well as making a $1,000 donation directly to Ovar’coming Together.

4th Annual Marty Brown Memorial Invitational

In November, we put on the flagship event of the Marty Brown Memorial series: the 4th Annual Marty Brown Memorial Invitational. This is a special event since Marty particularly enjoyed rifle marksmanship as well as shooting at Camp Atterbury where we hold the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational.

No doubt partially due to COVID-19 concerns, we had 14 participants. However, we had people travel from as far away as New York state to join us!

Camp Atterbury is now the home of the NRA High Power Rifle Championships and we utilize the same ranges. Our Revere’s Riders Rifle Qualification Test (R3QT) is modeled on the traditional “service rifle” qualification used by the US Army during WWII as well the NRA’s “National Match Course”.

While November weather can be “challenging”, we enjoyed fantastic weather for the whole weekend. The only downside to our weekend were the frequent calls for a “check fire” for downrange fires to be addressed.

This year saw the first perfect score of 40-11V put up by James Rose.

Jim is definitely worthy of the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational trophy; he is a frequent competitor in the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational and always puts up solid scores. Congratulations Jim and we will see you next year!

Through generous donations of items to our silent auction, skills contest and give aways at the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational, we were able to present a check for $3518 to Ovar’coming Together. We accomplished this even though the Invitational had far fewer participants than either Open Round #1 or Open Round #2!
